About NewYorkCourtFile
Free criminal court statistics for every county in New York
Our Mission
NewYorkCourtFile.com exists to make New York criminal court data accessible to everyone. When someone faces criminal charges, they deserve to understand the landscape — how similar cases are typically resolved in their county, how long the process takes, and what outcomes to expect. We transform raw public records into clear, actionable statistics.
The Data
All statistics on this site come from the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) Pretrial Release Data — the same dataset used by policymakers, researchers, and the press. We analyze 1,280,239+ case records spanning 2019–2024 across all 62 New York counties, from the five boroughs of New York City to rural upstate communities.
This dataset is publicly available and covers arraignment outcomes, bail decisions, case dispositions, sentencing, charge classifications, and demographic information. We do not access sealed records, individual defendant names, or any non-public information.
Who We Are
NewYorkCourtFile is built by a team with experience in data analysis, public records research, and legal technology. We believe that court data — already public by law — should be easy to find and understand, not locked behind paywalls or buried in government databases.
Our analysis methodology is documented on our Methodology page, and our data processing pipeline is designed for accuracy, transparency, and reproducibility.
How We Process the Data
- Acquisition: We obtain DCJS Pretrial Release Data files covering calendar years 2019 through 2024.
- Normalization: Raw records are cleaned and standardized — county names are validated against all 62 NY counties, charge codes are mapped to statute sections, and dispositions are categorized.
- Charge Categorization: Each charge is categorized by matching the Penal Law (PL) or Vehicle & Traffic Law (VTL) statute prefix to one of 29 charge categories.
- Aggregation: We compute dismissal rates, conviction rates, case durations, bail patterns, sentencing breakdowns, and charge reduction flows for every charge-by-county combination with sufficient case volume.
- Validation: Aggregate statistics are checked for consistency. Pages are only generated when the underlying sample size meets our minimum threshold (20+ cases).
What We Don't Do
- We never publish individual names or personally identifiable case details
- We do not provide legal advice — statistics are informational only
- We do not predict outcomes — historical patterns do not guarantee future results
- We do not access sealed or restricted records
